Smile Design by Dr Nikhil Oberai

If there is something about your smile that has always bothered you but you are not quite sure what the answer is, that is exactly where I start. A smile design consultation is not about selling you a treatment. It is about listening to what you want and working out the most honest route to get there.

Something about your smile has always held you back

It is rarely one dramatic thing. More often it is a collection of smaller things that have built up over time. A tooth that sits slightly out of place. A shade that has shifted from what it used to be. Gaps that appeared after straightening were never done. Work that was done years ago and no longer looks right. The cumulative effect of it all is a smile you have started to manage rather than give freely.

Many patients come to me for a smile design having already done a lot of research. They have looked at veneers, at whitening, at composite bonding, at implants. They have a list of options and no idea which one is right for them, or whether they even need all of them. The consultation is where we work that out together, without pressure and without assumptions.

Do any of the points below sound familiar?

You know something is not right but you cannot pinpoint exactly what

You look at photos of yourself and something is off. You cannot always articulate precisely what it is, just that it is not the smile you want. That is a completely normal starting point and a good one. It means the brief for your smile is not yet fixed, which gives us more to work with.

You have been self-conscious about your smile for years

The habit of covering your mouth. The reluctance to smile broadly in photos. The awareness that your teeth are the first thing you notice about your own reflection. These habits form quietly and stay for a long time. A smile design consultation is about changing that permanently.

You have had previous dental work that no longer looks the way it should

Crowns, veneers, bonding, fillings. Work that was done years ago and has discoloured, chipped, or no longer matches the surrounding teeth. It looked fine at the time. It does not look fine now. Bringing it back into line with the rest of the smile is exactly what smile design addresses.

You do not know where to start or what you actually need

There are so many options in cosmetic dentistry and most of the information available online either oversimplifies or overwhelms. You do not need to arrive at the consultation knowing what you want. You just need to arrive.

The good news is, you do not need to know the answer before you come in. That is my job.

Smile design is not a single treatment. It is a process of listening to what you want, assessing what is clinically possible, and designing a bespoke plan that gets you from where you are to where you want to be in the most straightforward and cost-effective way.

Sometimes that means one treatment. Often it means a combination. Occasionally it means starting with something small to see how it changes things before going further. There is no formula and no standard package. Every smile design plan I produce is specific to the patient sitting in front of me.

What I can tell you is that patients who come in unsure of what they need and leave with a written plan consistently describe the consultation as the most useful dental appointment they have ever had. Not because they spent anything, but because for the first time they had a complete, honest picture of their options.

What smile design actually means, in plain English

Smile design is an umbrella term for the process of assessing everything about your current smile, understanding what you want it to look and feel like, and then producing a plan that uses the right combination of treatments to get there.

It starts with a conversation, not a camera or a chart. I want to understand what you see when you look in the mirror, what you want to be different, and what feels most important to you. From there I carry out a thorough clinical assessment of your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. I look at what is working, what is not, and what needs to be addressed first before anything cosmetic is considered.

The plan I produce is written, itemised, and cost. You take it home. You read it at your own pace. You come back with questions. Nothing is booked until you are completely comfortable with the direction.

Here is how the smile design process works, from first call to finished smile

The process is straightforward. Three clear stages, no surprises, and nothing that moves forward without your full understanding and agreement at every step.

1
Starting point

Free Smile Design Consultation

This is where everything starts. We sit down together and I listen to what you want to change about your smile, what you have tried before if anything, and what matters most to you in the outcome. I then carry out a full clinical assessment of your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. The consultation is in person at either my Northwich or Wilmslow practice. It is completely free and takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

Your Bespoke Treatment Plan

Following your consultation, I produce a written, itemised treatment plan specific to your smile and your goals. Every recommended treatment is explained clearly, along with the reasons it is included, what the process involves, how long it takes, and what it costs. Finance options through Tabeo are included where relevant. You take this plan home and come back with questions. There is no deadline and no pressure.

Here is what patients tell me after smile design treatment

Smile design is not about one dramatic moment. It is about the accumulation of small changes that together produce a result you notice every time you look in a mirror, and eventually stop noticing because it simply feels normal.

They smile without thinking about it

The self-consciousness built up over years of not quite liking what they see goes away. Not gradually, completely. They stop holding back and start giving their smile freely. Patients describe this as a surprisingly significant shift in how they feel day to day.

They feel confident in photos for the first time in years

The habit of stepping back, angling away, closing their lips just before the shutter clicks. It was so automatic they had almost stopped noticing it. After smile design treatment, it simply stops.

They understand exactly what was done and why

Every treatment in the plan was explained before it was carried out. There are no surprises about what changed or why. Patients leave knowing the full picture of their oral health and what the plan achieved, which makes it easier to maintain long term.

The plan was built around their goals, not a standard package

Smile design is genuinely bespoke. Not every patient needs veneers. Not every patient needs whitening. The plan I produce is designed for the specific person sitting in front of me, using the most appropriate and conservative treatments available to achieve their goal.

The cost can be spread interest-free

Through Tabeo, treatment costs can be spread over 12 months at 0% interest. For longer repayment periods, an APR applies. All options are discussed at your consultation before any decision is made.

How much does smile design cost in Cheshire?

The cost of a smile design plan depends entirely on what the plan involves. A consultation with whitening only looks very different from a plan that includes implants, veneers, and composite bonding. There is no single price for smile design because there is no single formula.

What I can tell you is that the consultation itself is completely free and that your written plan will include a full cost breakdown for every treatment recommended before you commit to anything. You leave knowing exactly what the complete transformation would cost, what each individual element costs, and what the most cost-effective sequencing of treatment looks like.

From there, whether you proceed with everything at once, in stages, or with a single starting treatment, is entirely your decision.

0% finance via Tabeo

Tabeo offers 12 months’ interest-free finance on smile design treatments. For repayment periods beyond 12 months, an APR applies. Full options are discussed at your consultation before any commitment is made.

Not sure if you're suitable? Give us a call. There's no obligation.

I'm Dr Nikhil Oberai MSC & Dental Implants are all I do

My focus throughout my career has been on the complex end of dental treatment, full arch reconstructions, corrective cases, zygomatic implants. But the foundation of all of that work is the same thing that underpins a great smile design plan: listening properly, assessing thoroughly, and then recommending honestly rather than ambitiously.

A bespoke smile design is not about doing the most. It is about doing the right things in the right order for the specific person in front of you. I hold a Master’s Degree in Dental Implantology from the University of Manchester and have been treating patients at my Northwich and Wilmslow practices for over a decade. The smile design plans I produce reflect that experience, that training, and that approach.

“For every problem, there is a solution. It might be challenging, but it is almost always possible.”

Credentials:

Common questions my patients ask me about smile design

Here are the questions our smile design patients ask most often — answered honestly and in plain language.

A smile design consultation is a free appointment in which I assess your current smile, listen to what you want to change, and produce a written bespoke treatment plan covering the recommended treatments, the reasons for each one, the process involved, and the full cost. You take the plan home and decide at your own pace whether and how to proceed.

No. You do not need to arrive with a treatment in mind. The consultation exists precisely to work out what the right approach is for your specific situation. Many patients come in having done a lot of research and are unsure which option to choose. Others come in knowing only that they want something to change. Both are perfect starting points.

Yes. If getting to either practice is difficult, I offer virtual consultations via video call. This works well as a starting point, though a full clinical assessment in person is needed before a complete treatment plan can be produced. We can discuss what makes sense for your situation when you get in touch.

It depends entirely on what the plan involves. A single treatment such as whitening or composite bonding might be completed in one or two appointments. A plan involving implants, alignment, and cosmetic work could span several months. I will always give you a realistic timeline as part of the written plan so you know what to expect before committing.

A smile design plan can include any combination of dental implants for missing teeth, teeth whitening, composite bonding, porcelain veneers, Invisalign for alignment, white fillings, and crown replacement. It can also include more advanced treatments if the clinical assessment identifies issues with the bite, gums, or bone that need addressing first. Every plan is different.

The cost depends entirely on what your plan includes. The consultation is completely free. Your written plan will include a full itemised cost for every recommended treatment before you commit to anything. Finance through Tabeo at 0% over 12 months is available, with an APR applying to longer repayment periods.

Both. A thorough smile design assessment covers the full clinical picture, not just aesthetics. It is common to find that addressing a clinical issue, such as a missing tooth or an old failing crown, is the most important first step in achieving the cosmetic result the patient wants. The two are rarely entirely separate.
