Dental Implants Abroad by Dr Nikhil Oberai

Whether you are thinking about going abroad for implants or you have already been and something has gone wrong, I want to give you honest information that helps you make the right decision for your long-term health.

The appeal of going abroad for implants is real. So are the risks.

I understand why people consider it. The cost of dental implants in the UK puts treatment out of reach for many patients, or at least that is how it appears. A clinic abroad offering the same procedure for a fraction of the price, packaged alongside a trip away, looks like an obvious answer.

Some patients who go abroad have a good experience. I want to be honest about that. But a significant and growing number do not. And when things go wrong after treatment abroad, the consequences are often more serious, more expensive, and more difficult to resolve than patients anticipated when they booked the original trip.

I see the results of overseas implant treatment regularly at both my Northwich and Wilmslow practices. The cases range from minor prosthetic issues to significant surgical complications requiring extensive corrective work. This page is for anyone considering the decision or dealing with the aftermath of it.

Do any of the points below sound familiar?

You are weighing up the cost and it seems like an easy saving

On paper the numbers look straightforward. Treatment abroad is cheaper, sometimes significantly so. What the price comparison does not show is the full cost of complications, return trips, corrective procedures, and the long-term impact on your oral health if something goes wrong.

You are not sure what standard of care you will receive

Dental regulation varies enormously between countries. The qualifications required to place implants, the quality standards for the materials used, the requirements for follow-up care, none of these are consistent across borders. You will not always know what you are getting until the work is done.

You have already had treatment abroad and something does not feel right

Pain that has not settled. An implant that moves. A crown that does not fit properly. Something about the result that was not what you were shown. You are back in the UK and not sure where to turn or whether anything can be done.

You have been told by a UK dentist that the overseas work cannot be corrected

This is the point at which many patients arrive at my practice. Having already heard that the situation is beyond repair. In most cases I find that this conclusion was reached too quickly, without the detailed assessment that a full 3D CT scan makes possible.

Whether you are planning treatment abroad or dealing with the aftermath, there are better options available than you might think.

If you are considering going abroad for implants, I am not going to simply tell you not to. What I will tell you is that the free 3D Smile Assessment at my practice gives you a precise, written cost plan for treatment in the UK, with 0% finance available through Tabeo, before you make any decision. I would ask you to come and find out what treatment would actually cost here before you book anything elsewhere.

If you have already had treatment abroad and something has gone wrong, I want you to know that failed or failing overseas implant work is something I deal with regularly. It is complex. It requires thorough assessment. But in the majority of cases I see, a viable corrective route exists. Come in with whatever records and scans you have and let me take a proper look.

Something has gone wrong. Here is what you need to know

If you have returned from overseas implant treatment with a problem, the most important thing you can do is get it properly assessed as soon as possible. Not by someone who will simply tell you whether the implant looks fine from a standard X-ray, but by someone who will do a full 3D CT scan and tell you exactly what is happening at the site, in the bone, and with the surrounding tissue.

The earlier a failing implant is assessed, the more options are available. Infections left untreated cause bone loss. Bone loss reduces what is possible when it comes to replacement. Time is a factor in corrective cases in a way that it is not in straightforward ones.

I do not need the original clinical records from the overseas clinic, though they are useful if you have them. I do not need you to have a diagnosis. I just need you to come in with an open account of what happened and let the CT scan tell us what we are dealing with.

Here is how I approach corrective cases from treatment abroad

Every case that comes to me from overseas treatment is different. What stays the same is the approach: thorough assessment first, honest conversation second, treatment plan third.

1
Starting point

Free 3D Smile Assessment

Your consultation is completely free and includes a full cone beam CT scan focused on the affected site. The scan gives me a precise picture of what is happening at the implant, the bone condition around it, and whether any infection or deterioration has developed. You leave with a written assessment and an honest view of your options. No obligation to proceed.

Free · Approximately 45 to 60 minutes
2
Before we begin

Full Case Review and Treatment Planning

Once I have reviewed your scan and the history of what was done, I build a treatment plan specific to your case. Some corrective cases are straightforward replacements. Others involve bone grafting to rebuild a damaged site. Others require more extensive reconstruction. I walk you through every step and every cost before anything is agreed.

Clinical planning · Tailored entirely to your case
3
The procedure

Site Stabilisation or Failed Implant Removal

Where the failed implant needs to be removed, this is done carefully under local anaesthetic to preserve as much surrounding bone as possible. Where infection is present, this is treated as a priority before any new implant placement is considered. Sedation is available throughout.

Clinical procedure · Time varies by case · Sedation available
4
While you recover

Site Preparation

If bone loss has occurred at the affected site, preparation work is needed before new implants can be placed. This might involve bone grafting or a period of healing to allow the site to stabilise properly. This stage is the one most commonly skipped in rushed overseas treatment. Getting it right here determines whether the final result is durable.

Time varies · Monitored closely throughout

Connecting the pieces

New Implant Placement

Once the site is ready, new implants are placed correctly using the Osstem TSIII system, for which I am a Key Opinion Leader. Every placement is planned from the CT scan in advance.

Day procedure · Under local anaesthetic
6
The moment it all comes together

Final Restoration

Your permanent crown, bridge, or prosthesis is designed and fitted once the implants have fully integrated. The result should be what the original overseas treatment promised and failed to deliver.

Final appointment · Approximately 60 minutes
"From start to finish Nikhil and the team were fantastic. Being extremely nervous and worried, I was put at ease straightaway. Everything was explained, every process was faultless."

Here is what patients tell me after corrective or UK-based treatment

Whether patients come to me before going abroad or after, what they describe at the end of treatment is the same thing. They wish they had started here.

They have someone accountable and accessible throughout

UK-based treatment means that if anything happens, if a question arises, if something does not feel right in week three of healing, they can call the practice. I am here. My team is here. The continuity of care that treatment abroad cannot provide is built in from the start.

They know exactly what materials were used

I use the Osstem TSIII implant system, for which I am a Key Opinion Leader with four years of clinical partnership. I know its long-term performance data. I can show patients the evidence. That level of transparency about materials is not always available when treatment is placed overseas.

They have a result that lasts

The combination of thorough pre-treatment assessment, precise surgical placement, and proper follow-up care gives implants the best possible chance of long-term success. My implant success rate of 99.5% across more than 1,000 cases reflects that approach.

The cost is closer than they expected

Almost every patient who comes to me for a comparison before going abroad is surprised by how competitive UK treatment costs are once finance is factored in. The monthly payment on a 0% finance plan through Tabeo changes the conversation significantly.

Their natural teeth are protected

One of the greatest risks of poorly executed implant treatment is damage to the surrounding healthy teeth and bone. Receiving treatment from a clinician with the right training, the right materials, and the right approach means that what is healthy stays healthy throughout.

How much do dental implants cost in the UK compared to abroad?

This is the question at the heart of every patient’s decision about overseas treatment, and it deserves an honest answer.

Single tooth implants at my practices in Northwich and Wilmslow start from £2,550. Full arch reconstruction starts from £11,500 per arch. These are complete treatment prices with no hidden costs. Through Tabeo’s 0% finance, a single implant is available from approximately £71 per month over 12 months.

The comparison with overseas treatment is not always as simple as it appears. The UK price includes your full 3D CT scan, all follow-up appointments, and treatment carried out by a clinician with a Master’s Degree in Dental Implantology who is accessible and accountable throughout. The overseas price does not always include the cost of return trips for follow-up, and it does not include anything if something goes wrong after you come home.

Your exact written cost for UK treatment is confirmed at the free 3D Smile Assessment. I would ask you to come and find that figure before making any decision.

Tabeo offers 12 months’ interest-free finance on implant treatment. For repayment periods beyond 12 months, an APR applies. Full details and representative examples are discussed at your consultation before any commitment is made.

I'm Dr Nikhil Oberai MSC & Dental Implants are all I do

I have been taking on complex corrective cases from overseas treatment for many years. The pattern I see is consistent: patients who made a decision based on cost alone, without the full picture of what UK treatment actually costs or what complications can add to the final total. I do not judge those patients. I simply try to help them.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Dental Implantology from the University of Manchester and have been placing and correcting implants for over a decade. I teach these techniques at the same institution as an Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow. My implant success rate is 99.5% across more than 1,000 cases. I use materials I know, placed with a standard of care I can evidence. That is what I offer every patient who comes through my door, whether they are considering treatment or dealing with the consequences of having it somewhere else.

“For every problem, there is a solution. It might be challenging, but it is almost always possible.”

Common questions my patients ask me about dental implants abroad

Here are the questions our dental implants abroad patients ask most often — answered honestly and in plain language.

The risks vary significantly depending on the country, the clinic, and the clinician. Some overseas practices operate to a high standard. Many do not. The risks most commonly seen in patients who come to me after overseas treatment include poorly placed implants, inadequate bone assessment before surgery, substandard prosthetic materials, lack of follow-up care, and no recourse if something goes wrong. The decision should be made with full awareness of these risks, not just the headline cost.

At my practices in Northwich and Wilmslow, single tooth implants start from £2,550. Full arch reconstruction starts from £11,500 per arch. 0% finance through Tabeo makes treatment available from approximately £71 per month. Your exact written cost is confirmed at the free 3D Smile Assessment.

Come in for a free 3D CT scan assessment as soon as possible. The sooner a failing implant is properly assessed, the more options are available. Early intervention preserves more bone, more surrounding tissue, and more of what is needed for a successful corrective result. Bring whatever records you have from the overseas clinic, though they are not essential. The CT scan tells me what I need to know.

In the majority of cases yes, though the extent of what is possible depends on the condition of the bone at the site, how long ago the failure occurred, and what caused it. I regularly treat corrective cases from overseas treatment at both my Cheshire practices. Come in and let a proper assessment tell you what is achievable before assuming the answer is no.

Yes. Corrective procedures are a separate course of treatment. The overseas clinic is not liable in any practical sense once you have returned to the UK. This is one of the costs that does not appear in the original price comparison and it is one patients frequently describe as the most frustrating aspect of the experience.

Yes. Through Tabeo, treatment at my practices is available on a 12-month interest-free finance plan. For longer repayment periods, an APR applies. The details are discussed in full at your consultation before you commit to anything.

Yes, and I would strongly encourage it. The free 3D Smile Assessment gives you a precise, written cost plan for UK treatment before you make any decision. Many patients who come in for a comparison find the gap between UK costs with finance and overseas costs is smaller than they expected.
