CASE STUDY

Mike is one of the cases I come back to when I want to explain why I do this work.

Not because it was technically the most complex case I have treated, but because of what he told me at the end. He said he had stopped looking forward to spending time with his grandson, Timothy, because every family moment was shadowed by his embarrassment about his teeth. That stayed with me.

Years of struggling. A smile he had stopped using.

Mike had been dealing with dental problems for a long time before he came to see me. Over the years he had lost several teeth to decay and gum disease. Others had broken at the gumline, leaving the roots behind in the jaw. The ones that remained were weak, discoloured, and causing him ongoing discomfort.

Eating had become genuinely difficult. Anything with texture was off the menu. He chewed carefully on one side and avoided anything that required a proper bite. He had adjusted so thoroughly over the years that he had almost stopped noticing how restricted his diet had become.

What he had not stopped noticing was the effect on his confidence. Mike avoided smiling in photos. He was self-conscious in social situations. And he was most aware of it around his family, particularly his grandson Timothy. The moments that should have been uncomplicated and joyful had a layer of anxiety over them that he carried quietly.

He had done some research online before he came to see us. He had read about dental implants and about Brunner Court. He arrived cautious, not quite sure whether his case was treatable, and wondering whether the process and the cost were realistic for his situation.

Coming in and finding out that something could be done.

I remember Mike arriving slightly guarded at the consultation. That is common with patients who have been managing a difficult dental situation for a long time. They have often built up a picture of what they think they will be told, and that picture is not usually optimistic.

We went through his case in detail. CT scans were carried out to assess the bone available in both the upper and lower jaw and to plan the extraction and implant placement precisely. I walked Mike through every stage of what the treatment would involve, what each appointment would include, and what the result would look like. He had questions at every stage and I answered all of them.

By the end of that consultation, Mike had a written treatment plan, a full cost breakdown, and a clear picture of the timeline ahead. He decided to go ahead.

The process from start to finish.

The treatment involved extracting all of the remaining upper teeth and placing the implants on the same day. A temporary fixed bridge was fitted the same day so Mike left the clinic with fixed, functional teeth immediately after surgery. He did not go home with a gap or a denture. He went home with teeth.

After a healing period of around 12 weeks, we moved into the design phase for the permanent bridge. Mike was involved in every decision about the shade and shape of the final teeth. We did several try-in stages to make sure everything looked and felt exactly right before the permanent restoration was fitted.

He was incredibly patient throughout, and his trust in the process made every stage easier. My team at Brunner Court were with him at every appointment and he was supported throughout.

A complete smile. And a lot more than that.

The moment Mike saw the final result, the transformation in how he held himself was immediate. The fixed bridge looked completely natural. He could eat anything. He could smile without thinking about it. He told me the implant-retained teeth felt and looked like real teeth and that he could not believe how easy the cleaning and maintenance was.

What I remember most is what he said about Timothy. He told me he was looking forward to spending time with his grandson again without his teeth being the thing in the back of his mind. That is exactly what this work is about. Not the clinical outcome. The grandson.

Why cases like Mike's matter to me

Mike’s case is a good reminder of something I see regularly. Patients arrive having managed a dental situation for so long that they have almost accepted it as permanent. The idea that something can be done, and that the process is more manageable than they expected, sometimes takes a little time to land.

What Mike’s journey shows is that full mouth rehabilitation, even in complex cases involving multiple extractions and significant bone assessment, produces outcomes that genuinely change how people live. Not just how they eat. How they feel in the moments that matter to them.

If Mike’s situation sounds familiar to you, come and see me. Bring your questions. We will work out what is possible together.

“For every problem, there is a solution. It might be challenging, but it is almost always possible.”
