You've heard about implants. But what actually are they?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that sits in the jawbone, where your natural tooth root used to be. Once it’s in place and healed, which takes a few months, a custom-made crown is attached on top. The result looks, feels, and functions like a real tooth.

There’s no removal. Nothing to take out at night. Nothing to stick in with adhesive. You brush it and forget about it, the same way you would any other tooth.

A single implant replaces one tooth. For people missing several teeth, multiple implants or a full arch solution like All-on-4 can replace an entire row, top, bottom, or both, on just four implants per arch.

Am I actually a candidate for implants? (Most people assume they're not.)

This is the question almost everyone asks first and the honest answer is that most adults with missing teeth are suitable for dental implants. The majority of people who assume they’re not turn out to be wrong.

The most common reasons people think they’ve been ruled out:

“I’ve been told I don’t have enough bone”

Bone loss does reduce the options available, but it doesn’t automatically close the door. Bone grafting, sinus lifts, and techniques like zygomatic implants — which anchor into the cheekbone rather than the jaw — mean that treatment is still possible for many patients who’ve been turned away elsewhere.

“I’ve had gum disease”

Treated and stable gum disease doesn’t rule implants out. What matters is the current health of your gums and bone, not your history. If gum disease is active, it needs to be brought under control first — but that’s a step, not a barrier.

“I had implants abroad and they went wrong”

Failed or complicated implants from overseas treatment are increasingly common. They can be assessed, and in many cases, corrected. A proper clinical review is needed first to understand exactly what’s there and what’s possible.

“I’m too old”

There is no upper age limit for dental implants. What matters is your general health and the condition of your jawbone, not the number on your birthday card. Many patients in their seventies and eighties have successful implant treatment.

The only reliable way to know if implants are right for you is a proper assessment. Everything else, Google, a friend’s experience, something a dentist said ten years ago, is guesswork.

The Clinician Behind Every Implant at Heritage Smile Group

“When other dentists in Cheshire have a complex implant case, they refer it to Dr Nik.”

Dr Nik has focused his entire career on a single discipline: implant dentistry. His MSc from the University of Manchester is one of the most rigorous implant qualifications available in the UK. It is not a weekend course. It is years of clinically assessed postgraduate training.

His 99.9% success rate across hundreds of cases reflects what that level of training produces: meticulous planning, precise surgical execution, and an absolute refusal to treat implant dentistry as routine.

He teaches implant dentistry at postgraduate level at the University of Manchester. He is a Key Opinion Leader for Osstem UK, one of the leading global implant manufacturers. He mentors other implant clinicians at the Cambridge Implant Academy. When dental practices across Cheshire and the wider North West have a patient whose case is too complex to manage in-house, they refer to Dr Nik.

Your Implant Journey, Step by Step

Step 1 - Free Consultation

A thorough clinical assessment including x-rays and 3D CBCT imaging where needed. Dr Nik explains your options clearly, gives you a confirmed written cost, and answers every question you have. Free, no obligation, no pressure.

Your treatment is planned precisely using three-dimensional imaging. Every implant position, angle, and depth is mapped before the day of surgery. This planning is what makes the procedure safe, accurate, and predictable.

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic by Dr Nik personally. For Smile-in-a-Day patients, a complete fixed temporary arch is placed on the same day. You leave the practice with teeth.

Over three to four months, the implants fuse naturally with the jawbone. Dr Nik monitors progress at regular review appointments throughout.

Your final custom-designed prosthesis is fitted. The result you have been working towards is complete, and it is designed to last a lifetime.

What changes after having a Dental Implant?

Eat Whatever You Want

Apples, steak, crusty bread. No more adjusting your diet around your teeth.

Smile Without Thinking About It

No self-consciousness, no awareness, no moment of hesitation before a photograph.

Preserve Your Jaw Structure

Implants stimulate the jawbone the way natural roots do, preventing the progressive bone loss that dentures cannot stop.

No Removal, No Adhesive

Fixed teeth that stay in place all day, every day. Brushed in place just like natural teeth.

A Permanent Investment

Designed to last a lifetime. Not a five-year fix that needs revisiting.

Placed by an MSc-Qualified Clinician

Every implant at Heritage Smile Group is placed personally by Dr Nik, not a junior clinician.

Implants, dentures, or a bridge, what's the difference and which is right for you?

There are three main ways to replace missing teeth, and they’re not equally good. Here’s an honest comparison.

Dental implants

Permanent and fixed. Look and feel like natural teeth. Preserve the jawbone underneath. The most expensive option upfront and the most cost-effective over a lifetime because they don’t need replacing.

Dentures

Removable. Less expensive initially. Can slip or affect speech and eating. Bone loss continues underneath because there’s no root to stimulate the jaw. Most patients find them a compromise they learn to live with, rather than a solution they’re happy with.

Bridges

Fixed in place, but rely on the teeth either side of the gap being filed down as supports. Those healthy teeth are permanently altered. If the bridge fails, you’ve lost three teeth, not one. They also don’t prevent the bone loss beneath the gap.

The honest summary

Implants are the closest thing dentistry has to replacing a tooth properly, root and all. They’re not right for everyone, and a free assessment is the right place to start that conversation.

Nervous About Going to the Dentist?

You’re not alone, and you’re genuinely welcome here

Dental anxiety is more common than you might think. Whether it stems from a difficult past experience, fear of pain, or simply feeling vulnerable in the chair, we understand that visiting the dentist can feel overwhelming.

Dr. Nik and the team are well known for making anxious patients feel at ease, it’s one of the things patients mention most often in their reviews. We work differently with nervous patients: taking time to listen, explaining everything before doing it, and moving at your pace, not ours.

This is what most people want to know and are almost embarrassed to ask. The honest answer is that implant placement is almost always considerably more comfortable than people expect.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. You’ll feel pressure and movement, but not pain. Most patients say afterwards that they were bracing themselves for something far worse than what actually happened.

After the anaesthetic wears off, there’s typically some soreness and mild swelling for a few days — manageable with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Most people take a day or two off and feel fine after that.

If the idea of even that level of discomfort worries you, sedation is available. You’ll be awake but in a deeply relaxed state throughout. Many anxious patients find it genuinely changes the experience.

For a single implant, the process typically takes between three and six months from start to finish. The implant is placed first, then left to fuse with the bone over several months before the crown goes on top.

For full arch cases, the timeline is similar — but many patients are candidates for Smile-in-a-Day, where a complete set of fixed temporary teeth is placed on the same day as the implant surgery. You leave the practice with teeth. The final permanent prosthesis is fitted a few months later, once everything has healed and integrated properly.

Not everyone is suitable for same-day treatment — it depends on your individual case. Your assessment will confirm what’s possible for you.

A well-placed implant, looked after properly, can last a lifetime. The titanium post that goes into the bone typically stays there permanently. The crown on top, which takes all the wear of daily chewing, may need replacing after 15 to 25 years, depending on how well it’s cared for.

What affects longevity most is good oral hygiene and regular check-ups. Implants can’t decay, but the gum and bone around them can be affected by neglect. Treat them the way you’d treat natural teeth and they’ll reward you accordingly.

It’s a proper clinical consultation, not a sales appointment dressed up with a medical-sounding name.

At your assessment, the clinician will review your dental history, examine your mouth, and use digital imaging to get a clear picture of your bone levels, gum health, and what options are realistic for your situation. If 3D scanning is needed to assess your bone, that’s carried out at the same visit.

By the end of it, you’ll know whether implants are suitable for you, what the treatment would involve, how long it would take, and what it would cost. Everything in writing. No obligation to proceed. No follow-up pressure.

Most people walk out having had their questions answered for the first time, properly, by someone actually looking at their mouth.

You’re not alone, and you don’t need to explain yourself. Dental anxiety affects a significant number of adults, many of whom have been putting off treatment for years, sometimes decades, because of it.

The assessment is just a conversation. There’s no treatment at that appointment unless you ask for it. You sit in the chair, someone listens to your situation, and you leave knowing where you stand. That’s it.

When treatment does happen, sedation is available for patients who would prefer to be in a more relaxed state throughout. You’re awake, but calm. A lot of anxious patients tell us it was the thing that made it possible for them.
